This is a series that follows a girl named Lyra and her companions as she learns about the Dust phenomenon and how it affects not only her world but other parallels worlds.
I have to review this series as a whole rather than their individual parts. Individually these stories can be a little bit confusing, there are pacing issues and I wasn't a fan of a lot of the characters.
It wasn't until after I finished this series that I realized how much I enjoyed it. There is a wonderful combination of scifi and fantasy elements, there are cruel villain, and whimsy. It was a story about family the one we are born into and the one we create.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Lyra at the beginning but she went through an amazing character arc. She started off as such a reckless and foolish child but she quickly realized her actions carried consequences. She went through incredible lengths to try to right so many wrongs she created.
There were so many secondary and supporting characters that were used beautifully. I thought Will was an interesting character, he was a lot more jaded than Lyra. He was a wonderful compliment to Lyra's character. His serious personality balanced out her naivety.
I can't wait to see how Pullman expands on this world.
I give the series a B.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
