This is book that the famous musical is based on. Jean Valjean is released from prison but it having a hard time finding honest work. This epic novel really tackles the concept of good and evil during the French uprising in the 1800s.
Holy cow this was a big book.
While I love the musical and have cried along to the soundtrack numerous times, I wasn't sure what to expect from the book.
I thought I was going to get a better understanding of the characters and maybe expand on the time place.
I was not expecting the extensive history lesson. There was just so much information, it was so overwhelming. We learned about the history and the politics of the time. It was a little bit too much to get through.
What I really loved about this story was all the hardships that Jean Valjean went through. I just saw him as such a caring and hard worker. And it just made me so mad that the later part of the book followed lovesick Marius.
I hated seeing the love story between Cosette and Marius. I was just cringing the entire time they were interacting.
I do believe that it was an epic story, it just wasn't the story for me.
I gave this book a C.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
