Kellen only wanted to use magic. He wanted to be able to get his band and use magic outside the school. But when he tricks his way into winning a battle there are serious repercussions not only for him but for his family as well.
This book had such an interesting approach to magic. There are seven forms of magic and someone can only use that magic away from the source if certain bands unlock on their skin. The book did do a good job of explaining this world but it didn't click in my mind until half way through the book.
This book did have a different take on family. Kellen came from a prestigious family of magic users but in Kellen's world if someone cannot use magic they are treated like second class citizens. That was difficult to read at times to see how his family treat an uncle because of his lack of magic.
The best part of this book was seeing how Kellen would react to his environment and find solutions to stopping people. He was so so clever and was able to process so much information.
I know there is a sequel to this book and I can't wait to see how the author has expanded the world.
I gave this book a B.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
