This is a Bluebeard retelling set in Mississippi. After Sophia's dad dies, she goes to live with her godfather, Bernard in Mississippi. At the beginning Sophia is in thrilled, she gets a taste of luxury that she never had before. Her family has struggled in the past and as the youngest of four siblings, she knew she didn't many opportunities. But as the weeks go on, Sophia realizes that things aren't always what they seem. Her godfather becomes more controlling and things from his past aren't adding up. I wanted to love this book. I love fairy tale retellings and this started out pretty promising. I loved the setting and the writing. But this story was dragged out so much, I mean this book was over 350 pages. I also wasn't a fan of our main characters. Sophia knew she was putting herself in dangerous situations but instead of trying to escape it she stayed. I didn't like the reasons why she stayed. I didn't think she had a lot of character development. I just wasn't a big fan of this book. I ended up giving this book a D.
