This is a historical mystery novel set in 1896, New York. There have been a string of horrible murders on young male prostitutes. The police want to brush it aside. The city doesn't want to believe it. An alienist, physchologist, is putting a team together in hopes of capturing the killer.
Oh this was so good. It was such a complex and gruesome mystery.
I loved the world that the author created. This is a historical fiction but everything felt so grounded. This was such a well researched book, the author was able to talk about mental illness and how it was treated back then.
This is an adult thriller and a very gruesome one at that. The murders were very detailed and gory. The killer is described as New York's Jack the Ripper, he targets boys. This book was very difficult to read at times.
But the murders added to the mystery. There was a higher intensity for our characters to capture him. The characters in this book were really well written. Each character no matter if they are a protagonist or part of the supporting were vital to the story, they provided a lot of insight to the mystery.
I really enjoyed this book.
I gave it a B+.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
