This story takes place in alternating timelines. Both stories follow young women and how a painting has drastically changed their lives.
I absolutely loved Jessie Burton’s first book the Miniaturist and I was so disappointed that I didn’t like this book.
This book is a historical fiction taking place in the 30s and 50s. While I enjoyed learning about the setting and the events that were taking place at that time, that wasn’t enough for me to appreciate the story.
I wasn’t able to form any kind of attachment to either of the main characters. I wasn’t a big fan of the alternating timelines. As soon as I started getting used to following one characters and remember her back story the POVs shifted.
I just really wanted to like this book. I enjoy the author’s writing style. I loved the setting. I just could not lose myself in this story with these characters.
I gave this book a D.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
