Female space pirates!
That was pretty much the pitch that made me give this book a chance, well that and seeing the author’s enthusiasm in all her youtube videos.
I wanted to love this book but I think this is a case where the pitch was spot but the execution had much to be desired. Andi, her crew and Andi’s ex are on a mission to rescue someone. If this had been the sole focus of the book, I think it might have worked. Unfortunately, there are several other plots that are taking place at the same time.
There were too many plots and characters that weren’t well fleshed out. I kept confusing characters, timelines and settings. The members of Andi’s space crew were almost interchangeable, I can’t even tell you how many people are on it.
I just think this might have been too ambitious.
I also wasn't a fan of the writing. Characters were constantly explaining things, there was little to no mystery and it felt very juvenile. This is a young adult book but it feels like it was written for middle schoolers . . . minus the swearing.
But my biggest pet peeve was all this build up about this badass character but we never got to really see them be a badass.
I gave this book a D/C.
I devour worlds with each new book. I am making up for lost time as a late bloomer of the reading world.
